Children’s Church is held during the 10am service. It is a time for kids in preschool through 3rd grade to enjoy a worship service that is meant just for them!
We sing songs, learn the Lord’s Prayer, collect an offering, hear a lesson and participate in small groups. Each week varies a little — sometimes we have a game or craft, sometimes we have a video or skit.
The goal of Children’s Church is to help students understand the Love of Christ and to help them experience a little more what “Big Church” is all about.
During the school year, Children’s Church will follow the themes being discussed in “Big Church” and starts at 10am. During the summer months, we follow a summer theme and are dismissed to Children’s Church right before the sermon. This summer our theme is “Toy Story.”
4th and 5th grade
During the school year, our 4th and 5th grade students have a sermon time built just for them at the 10am service. They are dismissed right before the sermon and head to the Journey room. There they use their “Hands On Bible” and it’s activities to help guide them through a two year study of God’s Word.
Since the majority of the students in this class will have completed the Communion course, they will return to the sanctuary on Communion Sundays.
3rd Grade Bibles
Our Third Grade Bibles class is offered each Fall. The class is designed so that a parent attends with their student and they explore the new Bible together through activities and discussion. Students are then presented with their Bibles at the 10am service the following week. The presentation is an important and meaningful part of the Worship Service.
Although the class is called “3rd Grade” Bibles, any students who are 4th graders and were not here for the presentation their 3rd grade year are also welcome to attend. These are the Bibles that are used in the 4th and 5th grade 10am class.
First Communion
We offer two classes of First Communion each year. In the Fall we offer a course for older students. Students that are part of our confirmation/youth program, but did not have an opportunity to take the course when they were younger.
The class offered in the Spring is intended for 3rd or 4th grade students. This class includes the student’s parent and a time of rehearsal for their participation in the Maundy Thursday service.
Child Baptisms
We love celebrating your child’s faith walk with you. We offer Baptism Information classes four times a year. Anyone interested in having their child baptized is requested to attend one of these classes prior to the wonderful celebration.
Trish Kapelke will be your initial contact and she will get the process started. Baptisms are conducted during a worship service because of the important role of the people of God in each person’s faith journey. We can’t wait to hear from you!
Cradle Roll
This program is designed to help parents in the early years between baptism and Children’s church. There are milestones established about every 6 months. At each milestone your family will receive a letter and book that is meant to encourage your child’s faith development.
If your child is under 3 and has not received a Cradle Roll gift, please contact the office. We would be happy to enroll you in the program.
The Nursery at Olivet is designed for children under the age of 5. The Nursery is typically staffed by trained personnel on Sunday mornings. It is occasionally staffed on Saturday nights or for special services.
Our nursery Guidelines and Procedures are posted by the door. Children are always welcome to stay with their parents in the service, but our nursery is available if you need it.

Director of Family Ministries
Trish Kapelke and her family are excited to be joining the Olivet family as we continue to reach the Coulee Region with the love of Christ. Trish and her husband, Jim, have been doing ministry together for over 20 years. She has spent most of her career years as a middle school teacher and a Children and Family Minister.
Her hobbies include singing, sewing, reading, spending time with her family and playing volleyball.
A verse that challenges and inspires Trish is Psalm 139:14, which talks about how each of us are “fearfully and wonderfully made” and how God’s works are “wonderful.” This means that each student, child, adult and stranger have been made by God’s hands and deserve to know the amazing love that He has for them.
Another verse that she strives to live out everyday is Genesis 50:20. This verse talks about how the sinful world may desire to harm us or speak poorly about us, but God uses our circumstances to bring Him honor and glory.
Jim and Trish have been married for 24 years and have seven children.

I was born and raised in Devils Lake, North Dakota on a farm. I have a B.S. degree in Recreation Resource Management from the University of Montana, Missoula. I have lived in Montana, Oregon, North Dakota, and now Wisconsin- all beautiful areas.
I work at Gillette Pepsi in the pricing department. While I was a truck dispatcher at a freight brokerage company, I prayed that God would bring a nice man into my life. Lunar Transportation called me for a freight load and the rest is God’s blessing! Brad and I enjoy fishing, gardening, wine making, and Kids’ Church together.
We have 2 cats and live in Onalaska. I love antiquing, reading, cooking new recipes, and Jelly Belly’s. Brad and I would love to have a hobby farm. My favorite Bible story is the love of Jacob and Rachel. I can’t wait to meet Mary Magdalene in heaven. My life verse is Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
